EADT Business Awards

EADT Business Awards

Aponic had a night out last night and managed to win the EADT Small Business Award and be chosen in the Business of the year award too. We were also finalists in the Food and Farming award and Knowledge Catalyst awards. It was a great evening and we were delighted to be joined by two of our latest employees Charlie Howell and George Laws who we are sure will go on the great things in the company.

Many thanks to the sponsors of the event, The East Anglian Daily Times, The Suffolk Chamber of Commerce and EDF Energy with the category sponsors Adnams Brewary, Ashtons Legal and The University of Suffolk for making this such a special evening.

As a surprise extra, we also recieved the overall business of the year award finalist too, so really chuffed about that too.

We are looking forward to this summer and we may even be lucky enough to win a few more awards too so we will keep you posted!

Aponic at Number 10

SB100As part of our Small Business 100 Award, we were taken to Downing Street with many other businesses to talk to ministers and meet all of the other Top 100 UK small businesses.

Prime Minister Theresa May said:

“Small Business Saturday is an opportunity for us to celebrate the success of the UK’s 5.4 million small businesses - from family run restaurants, to innovative tech start-ups, to local corner shops.

I’m delighted that we had such a great representation of firms here in Downing Street to mark this event and recognise the prosperity they bring to the UK.”

“Small Business Saturday has become an exceptional example of collaboration and co-operation with small businesses teaming up in communities around the UK,” explains Campaign Director Michelle Ovens.

“We aim to showcase the level of diversity, innovation and talent that is active within our small business sector and persuading people to get out and support their friends, neighbours and family members and reinforce local communities and economies.”

American Express was the founder of the campaign in the US and is the principal supporter of Small Business Saturday UK, as part of its on-going commitment to encourage consumers to shop small. The campaign also benefits from the backing of leading business organisations including the Federation of Small Businesses and Enterprise Nation as well as other corporate supporters including PRS For Music, TalkTalk Business, Vistaprint, Post Office, Clear Channel, STIHL, Dropbox, Facebook, Virgin Media Business and Indeed.

West Suffolk Business Festival Winners!

Aponic Winners of Green/Environmental AwardsWe are really proud to have been awarded the Best Environmental Business Award last night at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds. It was a lovely evening and there were so many nice people there, we were put on the naughty table at the back which yielded two award winners in the end, us and a lovely wee thing called Chantelle who won the Apprentice of the year award.

The award was sponsored by Easton & Otley College and hosted by the Bury Free Press. All of the sponsors for the evening were responsible for sponsoring, enabling and inspiring my company and many others.

A good time was had by all, some new faces and some old friends and maybe a few sore heads and dancing injuries this morning but well worth it.

NIAB Research Hub News

Aponic Vertical Aeroponic Growing SystemThis week we have installed two systems into the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) Research Hub at Hasse Fen in Cambridge.

We put up a commercial system with some of our double sided tubes in for maximum growth space and some of our single sided tubes in the same system. We are going to plant with peas, broad beans, iceberg lettuces, greek basil and some kale to start with and some experimental crops too.

We also installed an aquaponic system to compliment research by Entomics into using black soldier flies to break down food waste and turn it into usable nutrients. We will be feeding the fish on a mixture of black soldier fly larvae and some of the produce from the growing tubes where we will be growing chia plants which are very high in Omega 3 oils. This will be a research project into true cirular sustainability of food crops which will also test the possibilities of creating commercial fish food without using huge quantities of fish trawled from the sea.

More pictures and updates to come.

Wow! We did the double!

You know I said we had got to the final at the Greenest Suffolk Awards in two categories? Well we won both of them! Apparently this has never been done before. I was very nearly requiring medical assistance after the first one was announced but was left speechless at the second one. Luckily it gave me the opportunity to thank the sponsors and organisers properly though.

We are still waiting for the official photos to arrive but in the meantime here they are, I feel like I actually bred them. Find out more here.

In the finals of Suffolk Greenest County Awards 2016

Only two days to go before the 2016 Suffolk Greenest County Awards where we are in the finals of two categories! It is at the Snape Maltings again this year which is a lovely venue. I never want to jinx these things by thinking about what to do if we do win, so in the event of success this year I plan to just burst into tears and thank someones parents.

Wish us all the best on Thursday afternoon and keep an eye out for some other great news waiting to be confirmed shortly.

The only way is up at ChilliBobs

Just before the Easter break I popped into Chilli Bobs in Newark to install a 10 tube commercial system in his greenhouses. Neil and Bob worked tirelessly in between tea breaks for two hours and we were up and running and some really lethal chillis are now being grown aeroponically!

We are already planning an extension on this system and an outside system once the weather warms a little more.

FCO day out at Mudchute Farm

We had the help of the Foreign and Commonwealth office to install an Aponic Salad Wall system at Mudchute Farm last week. Mudchute farm is the only working farm in London on the just at the foot of Canary Wharf on the Isle of Dogs. We had a really great day there, the FCO guys worked well and got the whole system assembled and put up and we got to plant the first crops in a few hours.

2016 03 10 10.35.04

After lunch we were looking at the places that the FCO are looking after where the Aponic commercial system would help where they are either short on water. lacking in soil or just where they need green stuff on the islands that they look after. We would love to help them further with some projects on Ascension, Pitcairn or the Falkland Islands where one or all of these areas are an issue.

If you get time, pop over to mudchute and see how the Aponic tubes are doing! http://www.mudchute.org/

We Won!

2015 10 23 11.00.08This morning Aponic Areoponics won the Essex Green Awards greenest product/innovation award. I was so pleased to get the support and enthusiasm from Essex County Council, UK Finance as well as the good people from Zero Below and The Write Impression who put so much time into organising the awards every year.

From the networking session afterwards I think we have identified some great companies and social enterprises that we will work with going forward to create community resources and low carbon commercial farms to help make Essex a much more green and pleasent place to be.

Thank you guys and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Green Essex Awards 2015

gea finalistlogo dark

Crumbs! We seem to have made it into the finals of the Green Essex Awards.

I am really pleased about this and hope we can use this to help spread us into the education sector across Essex as well as building the Aponic brand locally.

We really want to progess experiments in Essex with vineyards and progressive urban farming teqhniques that will build a secure future for water efficient, sustainable food production infastructure for todays markets and for future generations.

We are currently looking at a great project which is cleaning up urban lakes in Malaysia and turning them into a productive vegetable and fish farm as well as some really exciting African projects and it would be nice to be able to promote some local stories too.

Thank you Menta!

2015-09-30 11.59.23.jpgSo, we were exhibiting at the Menta Business Show yesterday and quietly going about the business of larking about with total strangers and preaching the gospel according to St Aponic, when Phil Pethybridge from Menta announced the winner of the best new business and it was us!

I can assure you that the bottle of champagne will go a long way to getting my voice back and soothing the aching feet of everyone on the Aponic Stand.

Big thank you to Menta, huge thanks to the guys on the stand, even the dodgy looking one in the photo, and a big tick for those chaps at Veuve Cliquot who always know how to do a pat on the back.

South African High Commissioner

ucsI just wanted to share this with you, we were invited to meet the South African High Commissioner last week on Monday at the UCS in Ipswich.

We set up overlooking the marina and waited for everyone to arrive. Once they were there I managed to demonstrate my unique 3d PowerPoint system, which is unusual in as much as I actually do a real demonstration with physical props, it is mind blowingly real!

His Excellency Obed Mlaba is a really nice chap with a steady hand on the trade tiller and a real enthusiasm for what we are doing.

I managed to talk to all of the delegates and we were then invited to appear at the Deloittes Building in London on Thursday...   Which was nice.

We are getting so much attention because we can deliver off grid farms anywhere in the world which create a crop of fruit, vegetables, salads and herbs as well as a harvest of fast growing, strong, healthy fish and all of this using 90% less water than traditional farming methods.

This is applicable in South African townships to give the people there a secure and sustainable food supply and also in areas where the main cash crop is cut flowers and we can deliver an efficient and productive system to grow commercial flower crops.

Our system arrives as a grid which takes a few hours to set up and then with the addition of four buckets of water and some sunshine to charge the electrical system, you have a low input, high output farm which will carry on producing lots of great quality food.

We are demonstrating again at Africa House next week with the African Knowledge Transfer Partnership which should be a hectic but exciting day to further our cause.

I will keep you updated on what happens.

Menta Trade Fair

Menta Trade Fair 2015Just in case you were wondering what, exactly, all of the fuss was about, we are appearing at the Menta Trade Fair at the Apex Centre in Bury St Edmunds this wednesday the 30th September.

We will be on stand number B38 on the new business balcony and will be demonstrating some new tech and giving vouchers away too!

We will have some plants to show but the fish will not be making an appearance as it is only a one day show and they really don't appreciate the travelling.

I hope to see you there, just as a heads up, there is a quiet drinks session in the top bar after the show closes, but don't tell anyone!

World Expo 2015

Aponic was one of the businesses picked to represent the UK at the World Expo 2015 in Milan! This meant that we were treated to a few days in Milan during the Agritech week to present our products to the International World Expo delegates.Aponic Vertical Soilless Growing

It was such a privilige and we met some great people to boot, not only did we get invites from other countries to attend trade missions to their countries, but we realised that by collaborating with other businesses that were presenting at the Expo, we can help each other to create efficient food production facilities all over the world.

Aponic Vertical Soilless Growing

Many thanks to the UKTI for our invite and we hope to see you all again on our adventures into new places!
